Metaphors was commissioned in 1960 by the American Wind Symphony Orchestra. The work is in four movements, each with a symbolic title that suggests the four seasons: “Awakening,” “Sprouting,” “Clinging,” and “Receiving.” It was the first piece composed by Chou according to his variable mode principles.
