The Chou Wen-chung Centennial Concert, recorded live at Columbia University’s Miller Theatre on March 21, 2024, is now available for viewing. First webcast on October 13, 2024, with a live Zoom Q&A, this video features five works composed by Chou Wen-Chung, including the American premiere of the rediscovered orchestral work In the Mode of Shang, performed by music director and pianist Joel Sachs and the new-music ensemble Continuum®.
The video recording was produced by David Merrill, who also engineered the audio, and by Steve Francis. Luyen Chou—the older of Chou Wen-chung’s two sons—and Joel Sachs also presented the webcast, offering introductions to each work (filmed/edited by Marc Dooley), followed by a video recording of the live panel discussion. Joining Chou’s sons Luyen and Sumin Chou on the panel were moderator Kathryn Knight and a roster of luminaries from the world of contemporary composition, including colleagues and protégés of Chou Wen-chung: his friend Roger Reynolds; his students Chinary Ung, Zhou Long, and Chen Yi; Delong Wang, a UCSD student and the third recipient of the school’s annual Chou Commission; and Wang’s teacher, Lei Liang, composer and chair of the Chou Wen-chung Music Research Center.
The Spiralis Music Trust and the family of Chou Wen-chung wish to express their deepest gratitude for all who made this concert, recording, webcast, and panel discussion possible, helping to mark the end of the first century of Chou Wen-chung’s story, music and legacy, and the beginning of the next.
